D&D DM'ing by Matt Colville

@BearStream Zombie dinosaurs with feathers!

#464

I got a copy of the Tomb of Annihilation today! I got luck as a pre-order fell through, but another game store had one unclaimed copy,

This is gonna be the best!

#465

So I’m running a side campaign for a one off in the campaign my team has been running for over a year now. It’ll be my first time doing anything as a DM, and I’ve been tasked with making “an interesting combat scenario”. So naturally my team will be fighting Evolve monsters in the form of alchemical mutants.

This is gonna be fun. I’ll post monster stats in here once I’m done adjusting them :stuck_out_tongue:

#466

OOOOOOOOOH! What stage will they be??

#467

I wanna see a Gorgon that can wall-pounce.

You can do that classic alien thing where if no-one looks up, no-one will notice the grotesque spider hanging from the ceiling, saliva oozing onto the heroes below…

#468

Gonna have options for all three stages. We have a few party members who ended up waaaay stronger than everybody else, but they may not be able to make it on my day, so I had to have options.

and @The_Little_Jay that’s literally gonna be how the first encounter goes down. I’m gonna have my team run perception checks over and over in the jungle until one of two things happen. Either they notice it, and it pounces on being seen and they are allowed a reflex save with advantage, OR it slowly climbs and follows them as they explore, and once it hits maximum height, it’ll pounce for maximum damage. :smiling_imp: Almost done on my first pass for gorgon.

I’m only a little worried that I may be making it too strong, but it will be a 6v1 fight.

#469

Will her spider traps be present?

#470

absolutely. I’m trying to work in special abilities.

#471

ok, so I have two versions of Gorgon.

These numbers are way too high for my team though, so I divided the hunters health by my party’s average health/damage to make it fair, but mechanically identical.

I’m guessing you’re running an older version of D&D (4th?). Second Gorgon looks solid, not sure you need the surprise/ambush initiative modifier, wouldn’t she just get the surprise round for attacking?

Also, no multiattack?

#473

I’m running 3.5 with my team. I probably should do multiattack - I’ll go read how it works. My team is almost pure diplomacy.

#475

Essentially she’d just get to make three attacks. Usually, two claw attacks and a bite attack. Gives the monsters some teeth, pun intended.

#476

Oh, that’s kinda perfect. I can translate that to two lights and a heavy. Thanks!

#477

Oh dude you have no idea. The most obscene series of nat 20s caused our party to win over almost every antagonist to our side and it’s breaking the campaign.

My DM has me using my idiot druid “accidentally” piss off NPCs simply because we need new conflict for the plot to actually progress.

So ye, I’m using the excuse of slightly eldritch kaiju to fix this problem for my one off.

#478

Time for some DnD memes!
